Five Smooth Stones

June 15-21: 1 Samuel 17

Thoughts inspired by Sister Andrea Muñoz Spannaus'

April 2024 General Conference talk tilted

"Faithful to the End"

Just five smooth stones in a shepherd’s bag

Was all that David brought,

To face the mighty Philistine,

Who against the Lord’s Israel fought.

Just five smooths stones and a heart convinced

In the name of the Lord he could fair,

For in His strength he’d been delivered before

From the paw of a lion and bear.

Though ruddy and small, and only a youth

And Goliath a mountainous warrior,

With one stone slung from the shepherd boys sling,

He came down and the battle was over.

Like David I carry five smooth stones

Assured with the Lord I’ll defeat,

Any mountain of trial that’s set up before me

Whatever the challenge I meet.

The stone of my love for my Father above

This is stone number one.

My love is inspired by His love expressed,

Through the infinite gift of His Son.

The stone of my faith in Christ the Lord

Will see me though every fight,

For He proved himself constant through His matchless life

And He promised that He’ll be my light.

With the stone of knowing who I am

And knowing that I have been chosen,

I can face any foe knowing I am God's child

And He cares with a Father’s devotion.

The stone of repentance, this daily renewal

Allows Him to reroute my path,

Changing my nature one choice at a time

As He guides me to all that He hath.

The fifth stone, God’s power He pours out upon me

As I covenant keep throughout life,

Gives me strength beyond what I can on my own muster

And peace during heartache and strife.

The world may come at me with trial and heartache

Like giant with shield and a sword,

With fierceness and terror they tower before me

...but I come in the name of the Lord.
