The Pharisee & Publican

Luke 18:9-14

Two men went up to the temple one day

And went they both to worship and pray

Each in a radically different way

The Pharisee and Tax Collector.

The Pharisee came his head held high

Praying, "Lord I'm thankful to be such as I

Righteous and worthy and saintly and wise

And not like this Tax Collector."

The Publican came his head bowed low

And in with his sin he dared not go

And smote his breast and whispered low

"Have mercy on this Tax Collector."

Oh may we never choose to be

Lifted up to this degree

For in his pride the Pharisee

Could learn from the Tax Collector.

That he who's high will be made low

And he who's low the Lord can grow

And thus the proud will someday know

Of their flaw as the Tax Collector.

For each in time will come to learn

Our righteousness we can not earn

And we'd do well this lesson to learn

From the Pharisee and Tax collector.
