A Season to Live

September 7-13: Ecclesiastes 1-3,11-12

The sun wakens early, and rises to shine

She shines till the evening, and then

She hastens right back to the place she began

To do it all over again.

A man grows to stature, a woman to grace

And then in the blink of an eye

A new generation steps into their place

For the way of the world is to die.

Despite all your efforts to build something new

In time you will come to discover

That all of the workings you’ve built to yourself

Will fall to the hands of another.

Why plant we the vineyards? Why toil in the ground?

Why labor if all will decay?

Why work we for silver or gather up gold

If the things that we build cannot stay?

For what is a man if he’s not what he’s gained?

What good are his efforts to strive?

What good is enjoyment if it cannot last?

For what purpose were we made alive?

A time is appointed to live and to die

In all things the Lord has a reason

A time to rejoice and a time set to mourn

And each comes about in its season.

For the day is not far when the Lord will return

To judge what we've made of our days

Did we choose in our labors to reverence the Lord

Did we walk in the light of His ways?

Perhaps in the end, our life is not measured

On all that we’ve built and retained

But instead will be judged on just what we’ve become

And the wisdom through striving we’ve gained.
