Chariots of Fire

July 6-12: 2 Kings 6:15-17

What lies beyond these mortal eyes

That only Heaven sees?

If I could peer beyond the veil

To where the spirit flees,

If my eyes so unattuned

To more supernal things,

Could see into the realm beyond

Enclosed in Heaven's wings.

If I could draw the curtain back

Between Heaven and me,

To see the Lord command His hosts

Oh just what might I see?

How often do the angel's hands

Hang over me to bless?

How often do my loved ones gone

Come aid in my distress?

When darkness fast approaches

And when evil doth conspire,

The hosts of Heaven circle in

Like chariots of fire.

Though these eyes are dimmed

And though my sight is unaware,

I do not have to now behold

To know that they are there.

So do not fear those who oppress

For this I know to be,

Though Earth and Hell may both combine

There’s more who stand with me.
