I Will Not Come Down

July 27- August 2: Nehemiah 2;4-6

The enemy hath broken up

The city walls I love,

Hath laid them waste and casted down

Her holy gates thereof.

But from the ruins of this place

A call that pierces through,

The Lord He whispers, "Gather in

And build my walls anew."

And since I love the Holy One

Then I will heed His call,

And have a mind to do His work

As I ascend the wall.

But there are host who now surround

Determined to delay

The work of God from going forth

Who stand to block my way.

"Come down from there," they call to me,

"The task is far too great.

Come down from there, oh can’t you see

Destruction was her fate."

"Come down," they call, "for do you think

Against us you’ll defend?"

And with their mocking, fiery darts

They bid me to descend.

And though they call for my retreat

Still I refuse to yield,

While one hand's wrought to do the work

The other holds a shield.

For though the world may mock my cause

And look on with a frown,

I’m building for my Lord and King

And I will not come down.
