The Parable of the Wheat & The Tares

Matthew 13:24-30,36-43; D&C 86:1-7

The kingdom of heaven is likened unto

A man that sowed wheat in his field,

And planting the seeds, he looked forth to the day

That unto him fruit they would yield.

But while the man slept, an enemy came

Sewing forth tares in his way,

And as the wheat grew, so did the tares

Much to his servants dismay.

"Oh what shall we do?" the servants lamented

"Shall we pluck up the tares in the crop?"

"Not so," said the master, "For if we uproot them

The growth of the good wheat may stop.

They must grow up together, mature side by side

And then when the season is ended,

We'll leave the tares out in the field to be burned

Once we harvest the wheat as intended."

In this fallen world, the good and the bad

Often must grow side by side,

And wisely the Lord is patient until

All His goodness He gathers inside.
